Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy and Counseling provide a confidential setting in which emotional difficulties can be explored. This process requires regular meetings and a commitment from both the patient and the therapist.

Psychotherapy's main goal is to reduce symptoms that a person might feel. These symptoms include anxiety, sadness, difficulties communicating at home, work or with friends. A person may also feel incapable of regulating his emotions, have many somatic preoccupations and lack energy and organization to complete daily tasks.

A person may seek psychotherapy if he/she has:

  • Relationship issues - separation, divorce, sexual problems, intimacy issues, communication difficulties.
  • Academic / Vocational / Employment issues.
  • Difficulties adjusting to a medical condition.
  • Emotional issues - Depression, anxiety, fears, stress, panic, low self esteem.
  • Substance Abuse issues - or if one has a family member who is an addict.
  • Adjustment issues.
  • Burn out and stress related to work.
  • Sexual Identity issues.
  • Sleeping disorders.
  • Difficulties and nervousness with socialization issues.

Psychotherapy is a process where one understands himself through intense discussions, dream analysis and involves a new understanding of the environment (family and society) that he was raised in.

Through psychotherapy a person becomes aware of his capacity for learning to live in harmony with others and with society. As this innate potential for social connectedness becomes conscious a feeling of genuine security emerges rooted in a deep sense of belonging. The main criterion for mental health is a feeling of human connectedness and a willingness to develop oneself fully and contribute to the welfare of others.

Choosing a psychotherapist is a very important issue. It is important to check the credentials and experience of the person you are about to see, and to make sure that "chemistry" between the two of you exists. The relationship that you will develop with your therapist is crucial to the treatment outcome and relief of your symptomatology.

Psychotherapy can take few sessions or few years depending on what kind of problem you are faced with and what decision you and your therapist will make. This decision is usually made in the first sessions of therapy in the development phase of treatment planning. If the focus of treatment is a specific problem, psychotherapy will take fewer sessions than when the treatment request has to do with personal growth.

Couples therapy- Intensive Couples Therapy- Marriage retreat

By Lenna Kastrisiou, Med., Psy.D.

Clinical Psychologist & Relationship therapist: Extensive experience dealing with relationship, family and multi-cultural issues.

COUPLES-FAMILY THERAPY

I believe that you owe it to yourself to do everything you possibly can to try to save your marriage.

I believe that people have the right to be happy, that children greatly benefit from authentically happy parents, and that the most important goal is to follow the truth... to treat each other honestly... and to do that with love and respect.

If you are troubled with relationship issues, married or not, it is a good idea to consider discussing your thoughts with a professional licensed relationship therapist because your personal situation is affecting your happiness more than anything else.  All life aspects can be handled a bit easier if you have peace at home.

Relationship or marriage counseling can teach you effective ways of communicating, understand yourself and your partner better and ultimately it can help you decide whether or not to stay in your relationship. Couples come into counseling with a variety of issues to address including communication & conflict resolution, sexual & intimacy issues, fighting and anger problems, identity and role conflict, dependence vs. independence, religion, ethics and values, jealousy, parenting, infidelity, money and finances, addiction, family and in-law struggles, step family issues, gender roles, infertility / adoption, and many more.  Relationships deteriorate gradually. If you experience the following signs, your relationship  is in trouble. The early signs are:

Inability to communicate, feeling misunderstood

Diminished sexual desire

Fighting almost over every little issue

Inability and lack of desire to make plans

Experiencing sadness, anger, despair

Having an affair

Decide if you should get married (pre-marital counseling)

Couples counseling can help resolve conflicts and heal wounds. If you are at the point where you consider separation, if you feel sad, or angry, or fear, or resentment, if you do not know how to handle your relationship, it is important to seek professional help so that can decide which way to go.

My belief is that both partners need to understand their needs and evaluate what is keeping them in the relationship. Sometimes, as the years go by, both or one partner becomes too close to the other, or to the children and loose parts of themselves. The relationship is blamed, or the partner is blamed without taking personal responsibility of how the relationship has evolved. If you come in to therapy early, when the problems begin to arise, you have more chances in saving your marriage/relationship. I also believe that intimacy is a key issue in a relationship which is often not dealt with.

It may be time for couples therapy.  Couples therapy can help you rebuild your relationship. Or decide that you'll both be better off if you separate. Either way, couples therapy can help you understand your relationship better and make well-thought-out decisions.

Couples retreats can be scheduled at my office in Kifisia, Athens, Greece.  Think of a couples retreat at the office as intensive couples or family counseling.  Intensive sessions take 4 hours and at the end you will attain the insight needed to make a decision on which direction to follow with the family issues you are faced with. However, I have a unique approach to therapy. I strongly believe that therapy can be more effective when it is integrated into people's lives and away of the structured office environment.

Couples therapy can help if you are are:

  • On the verge of divorce.
  • Wanting to save your marriage.
  • Just not fully satisfied with your relationship.
  • A couple where one or other partner is afraid of taking the next step to marriage or to having a family. A couple in need of premarital counseling.
Sometimes people who are meant to be together break up just because they don't know how to be in a relationship. That's where I can help.

HOW IT WORKS- COUPLES THERAPY AT THE OFFICE

If you reside away from Athens you can schedule a phone consultation by calling +30 210 8082 490, or +30 6944 226062. If you prefer, you can email us at Αυτή η διεύθυνση ηλεκτρονικού ταχυδρομείου προστατεύεται από κακόβουλη χρήση. Χρειάζεται να ενεργοποιήσετε την Javascript για να τη δείτε. .

If you reside in Athens, you can call the office at 210 8082 490 and I can schedule a meeting in Kifisia once for a 90 minute initial consultation and I will be able to make a recommendation about the best way to treat your relationship issues.

Possible Recommendations:

  •  I can see you in weekly 50 minute sessions at the office
  •  I can recommend intensive therapy in case you are dealing with a crisis, or
  •  I can recommend a 2-day intensive retreat program

Whether we meet at the office or at the retreat, in the beginning of your counseling I will learn about the two of you in detail.

The first meeting is with the two of you together, to learn about you as a couple. The second meeting is the one and only time we meet with each of you separately, to learn about you as separate people. The third meeting is a feedback session with the two of you together. I will tell you honestly how easy – or hard – it would be to make these changes.  I will be frank about your level of motivation and your willingness to change. Then you decide what you want to do.

FEES at the office in Kifisia

Each 90 minute initial at the office is charged 150 euro (couples consultation).

Each 50 minute therapy session at the office is charged 100 euro (Individual /couples therapy).

HOW IT WORKS-COUPLES THERAPY AT A RETREAT

“potamos” COUPLES THERAPY RETREAT.

Relationships flow like a river. You need to know where you are going, what are you doing, know when to be in control but also when to let go, understand the risks and learn to enjoy the ride.

A combination of traditional psychotherapy with outdoor activities can help you relax and understand yourselves at a deeper level. You will discover your inner truth.  Your thoughts, your actions and your words will become synchronized and you will make the necessary decisions that will guide you to happiness.

This is an example of the schedule of a typical 2 day retreat: (the one day program is more intense)

  • Upon confirmation of your sign-up I will send you a questionnaire to begin your preparation process
  • You arrive in your destination Friday afternoon or early Saturday morning. One outdoor activity is included in my fee.Travel, meals and hotel not included in my fee. See our suggested accommodations.
  • Outdoor activity- Relaxation-hiking-10:00-11:00AM
  • First  couples session at 11:00AM on Saturday morning . The first couple of hours are spent discussing your roots: your families of origin, your current family, as well the roots of your romantic involvement with each other. After the session you will be practicing the communications skills you are learning, talking to each other on a new deeper level about how your relationship began and grew (or did not grow), about your hopes and dreams for yourself and for your relationship together, your regrets and sorrows, and where you see things going. In addition we suggest things to do together... and hope that you can have some fun and relaxation after the day's intensive session.
  • Recommended outdoor activity (hiking, rafting, biking, kayaking etc) 1:00PM-Included in your fee
  • Session and Assignment 5:00PM
  • Meet again on Sunday 11:00AM(Day 2). This session tends to be more intense, dealing with the hotter topics (and deeper issues) that need to be addressed. As an experienced therapist I will guide you safely through those areas which have been too hot to handle in the past. When you leave on Saturday, I will give you suggestions of ways to re-connect and take your relationship to a healthier more intimate place (or sometimes to lovingly disconnect and begin to separate more).
  •  Lunch3PM and departure

Your children are welcome to come along. Please let us know so that we can discuss about their needs to participate in family therapy or to attend outdoor activities.

Couples that attend my relationship counseling program get in touch with their deeper truth whether it is to rekindle and rescue their relationship, explore the decision of a separation, or to work towards a friendly divorce with the tools to make their next relationships more satisfying and be better co-parents.

Let this be the vacation that changed your life and strengthened your relationship.
